From a design by Mary May. Starting with a rough clay sculpture, I tried to make the final carving less grotesque but keeping the ferocity
Quite challenging to carve the veins along the undulating surface of the leaf
A gift for my nephew. Who doesn't want a Xenomorph tail? (from the film Alien). The goal was to make it look as organic and realistic as possible, like a film prop. Finished in black lacquer and wax polish
That's what sycamore seeds are called. No, I didn't know that either. I found this one in Spain, and after sketching it I thought it would make a good subject for carving
I was fortunate to grow up in an environment surrounded by wood shavings, clay sculptures, wax models, plaster casts, rubber moulds, and every kind of wood working tool you can imagine. After over 30 years of corporate life delivering 'shareholder value' for others I'm now focussed on creativity, both as a sculptor and composer.
Having taught myself the basics of carving I'm now a full time student at City & Guilds Art School in London, where I'm learning the skills of historic wood carving and gilding from the experts.
You can follow me on the journey here or on Instagram. And don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested in owning a bespoke sculpture or picture frame, or are simply interested in learning how to start carving yourself. I'm passionate about helping to keep the craft alive and I'm more than happy to share advice or knowledge.
